In many producing nations, colonizers brought in coffee to extract wealth from the territory. The crop was grown on plantations run by ruling classes and worked by enslaved or indentured laborers, and the harvests were shipped to Europe to power the Industrial Revolution. Wealth generated by coffee flowed northward, filling the treasuries of Spain, France, Great Britain, and other imperial powers.",[16,59,60],{},"The contemporary coffee trade still carries echoes of that history. One of the most apparent legacies is the general absence of a coffee-drinking culture in the countries best known for growing the crop. So what has happened is that a lot of these areas that had beautiful coffees have moved away from coffee farming and have turned coffee into concrete.\"",[16,81,82],{},"Meanwhile, neighboring coffee-producing countries are increasing output. We're seeing them in Meru, Nyeri, and Nandi Hills—the fact that these [coffee shops] are there is very exciting.\"",[16,93,94],{},"Through her family's farm, Gitata-Kiriga stays connected to coffee. \"When I told my mum that I was going to start this company, she was very excited because she thought that I was going to get into coffee farming,\" she says. \"And I said no, I did not want to get into coffee farming.
